Meet Tim Ferrone

Meet Tim Ferrone

Chris Smith24 Sep 2024 - 14:49

......our new Lead Youth Coach as we reprise our meet the club officials feature

Year joined the club?
2023

Where have you coached before -
Frimley CC, Old Woking CC, Twenty20 Community Cricket, for the MCC Foundation, for Surrey Cricket Foundation, Charterhouse School, countless schools for Chance to Shine. Apologies to those I've left of - please forgive my failing memory!

In your mind which famous cricketer are you most like?
Well, Robin Smith was the cricketer I most followed growing up - spent a lot of time working on my cut shot...

Which famous cricketer would you like to be for a day and why?
Freddie Flintoff looked like a guy who had a lot of fun in his career...

Which international Coach past or present do you think you are most like?
I wouldn't claim to be like him, but I love what Brendon McCullum is all about. Play for fun, and in the right way.

Who was the best coach you ever had and why?
I think the best coaches I've encountered are those since I've been on a coaching pathway myself. There are a number (and several of this very parish!) who have inspired me, and from whom I've learned 99% of what I do, for which I'm infinitely grateful.

If there’s one thing as a coach youd like us all to be good at doing at Pirbright – what is it and why?
Encouraging team-mates. Dropped catch? Botched fielding? Wide delivery? Nicked behind? Never blame... always emphasize that there is a next time/game/ball, and that you're rooting for them. And its something that is so easy to do, but also so easy not to do. That's a non negotiable for me.

Which do you prefer - the Hundred or 20:20?
I honestly don't have a preference. People outside cricket can't perceive any difference. Bat, ball, bowler, batter, fielder... let's play!

Which 100 team do you support?
The Oval Invincibles.

What’s your go to call, Heads or Tails?
Heads. Not sure why.

Bourbon or custard Cream?
This is where the questions start to get tricky... I'm just going to say 'biscuits!'

What is the best game of cricket in which you’ve ever been involved with as a player or a coach -
a last ball tie, for a team I was coaching, and on the field acting as square leg umpire at the time. The away team needed 2 from 2 deliveries. First ball was slapped through the covers for a certain four, only for one of our historically lesser fielders to dive from nowhere and keep it to one. Bowled all ends up last ball, for a tie in which our team played their socks off. Cricket was the winner!

If you had to had to hit a 6 off the last ball to win a game what shot would you try to play? I'm probably down the pitch aiming inside out over cover. If I'm lucky, it flies off the outside edge over third man...

Thanks Tim !
