Get to know - Interview Simon Gurney

Get to know - Interview Simon Gurney

Chris Smith19 Apr 2022 - 09:47

As our walking cricketers - The Penguins - make history we catch up with the "head Penguin" Simon Gurney

The Pirbright Penguins, pictured last year, are a group assembled mostly by our late President Derek to come and play a new form of cricket on the Green.... Walking Cricket. This was something that Chris thought we run as it opened the green up to another group of cricketers and Derek pounced on the idea. We were one of only 2 groups in the county playing this form of the game, which is essentially Pairs softball cricket, with a few tweaks, at a walk! The team play on the green on Wednesday mornings 9-10:30am starting in May.

The group so inspired everyone that Surrey Cricket have, set up a Surrey league which is being sponsored by our club 1st XI Captain Ian Milton's Company. The launch of this league (as part of a wider initiative to increase participation of walking cricket county wide) is taking place on 5th May at the Oval in the lunchbreak of a county game. This will be attended by the Pirbright Penguins in their league wide matching (though different logo and colours for each club) coloured kit with cameras and the like.

Simon Gurney has taken on the mantle from Derek as the leader of the pack although he sees himself as facilitator more than the captain. We put the same set of questions to him as to all the other interviewees in the series....
